However you need to have a good understanding of the basics of article marketing so you can avoid the common mistakes of article marketing. Here are some of the errors that marketers should avoid in article marketing.

Bad or Inappropriate Headlines.

Writing attention grabbing headlines are great provided the headline matches the article content. It stands to reason that if you spend time writing a good article then you want to get it read as many times as you can. If you have a bad headline or one that is meaningless then your chance of getting your article read is very low. What you need is an attention grabbing headline that reflects the content of your article as this will help give you credibility so that if people like your article they will want to read more.

Not Targeting Your Audience.

Before you write your article you need to work out who you are targeting to read your article. To do this you need to research your niche and find out what the people in this niche are interested in as your article should be written to focus on their needs, concerns or desires. Therefore you need to write your article to target your audience and not merely write about something that you think may be of interest to them.

Excessive Article Publishing.

Some marketers think that you need to publish your article in lots of categories in article directories, newsletters and sites. However this is considered spamming and most reputable directories will either only accept original articles or delete all your articles. What you should aim to do is have well written articles and publish them just enough so that other people will pick them up and republish them on their websites, newsletters and blogs. If you are serious about starting and online business than there are only a couple requirements you need to be successful.

· MindsetInternet marketing is a dynamic, ever changing environment and requires a good work ethic. It is not a get rich quick, no work required business, no matter what someone else tries to sell you. You need a good business plan, and a good work ethic to complete the tasks required to carry out that plan.

· Have a niche – You must have a product or service that you are interested in selling. It should be one that either you are passionate about or know a great deal about. You will then need to have something of value to offer and then brand your niche around the value you offer.

OK, for those that really know what they want, have the work ethic required and a product or service they wish to market online than there are a few things you will need. These may seem obvious however doing this step by step correctly, will save you a lot of valuable time and money.

· Pick a keyword rich domain name – You will need a domain name that is relevant to your niche and the words used in your domain names (many use more than one) should be a keyword or a keyword phrase.

· Website – You will of course need a website and not just any site will do. I highly recommend using a WordPress site to start because they are very professional with an easy to learn CMS (control management system). Lots of internet marketers talk about keyword search and how important it is for any online business. However what exactly is keyword research and why is it so important for any business on the net. 

What is Keyword Research?

Keywords are often used by people searching online for information and it is very similar to using an index in a physical book. People use words to type into search engine search boxes to find what they are looking for online. These words are called keywords in the internet marketing world.

If you know what words people will use to find your business then you will get lots of potential traffic from the search results. These words can be found by doing some keyword research which will also tell you how many people are searching for these words and what kind of competition you will have for these words.

If you can find words with lots of searches and very little competition you will rank higher in the search results much sooner than if you have lots of competition for them. Keyword optimization refers to using your keywords in various places through out your website to get your website listed as high as possible in the search engine results. If you can rank high on the first page of the search results you will get lots of free traffic to your website.

If you have the mindset and the skills required for starting an online business than the first step is getting your first customers. Many struggle with how to get their first customers, so here are a few helpful tips.

Almost every small business starts with selling to their inner circle of friends and colleagues. They are the easiest to reach in the shortest amount of time. The most important aspect of selling is to give your audience value, make no mistake about it, if you have no real value you will not be in business long. By supplying your customer value you will likely have return customers, leading to more sales. This is the key to being successful in any business and is what all successful companies market, value and return customers.

List building is an essential part of any online business and should be a high priority. Think of this as a highly targeted customer list. Offer them something of value at no charge to sign up to your list. This could be anything your customer wants or thinks they need. The fun part is you can experiment with different things to see what works and what does not. I know companies that offer discounts on first time purchases, coupons, newsletters with discounts, etc…

I highly recommend using a first class, automated email collection system such as Aweber to eliminate the possibility that someone thinks you are spamming. Aweber is the worlds best autoresponder and has a double opt-in system.
