The Power of Great Website Copy – Why Content Counts

If you are under the impression that the words you use to talk about your product on your website are not the main event and that if your product is good enough its quality will shine through, please think again. Inferior website copy very often leads to potential customers judging your product and/or your business as inferior. Once this often snap, judgment has been made, your potential customers are only a hop, skip and a click away from heading in the direction of your competitors as fast as their browsers will take them.

Reflect how seriously you take your product and the zeal you have for your business by choosing quality content for your site, after all it is your shop window and should be dressed appropriately and in as eye-catching a way as possible.

Ensure that everything on your site is bang up-to-date as it will give the impression of your having your finger on the pulse; out-dated industry news will give the impression of a business that doesn’t have a clue what’s going on, hard to trust a firm that can’t keep-up with the changes. It is also much easier for those browsing your site to believe that the product is no longer available if everything they see screams 5 years ago.

It is important that you show how clued-up you are about your industry and your chosen market; use your front page to demonstrate this with fresh, informative copy that talks of current aspects of the business and lets everyone know that you understand who you are selling to.

If you don’t turn people on with your web content you cannot hope to turn them on with your product. A site filled with dull or sloppy copy is unlikely to hold anyone’s attention long enough to get them to buy, but if someone does happen to stay long enough to read it, they are likely to be left believing that the product itself is dull or ineffective. So look carefully at your web design, if it is attractive and interesting people will stick around longer and are more likely to buy into the idea of something good being on offer.

If you feel unable to provide the design or write the words for your site yourself then get a professional on board, having a professionally designed site or at the very least a site filled with professionally put-together content will always pay for itself in the long run in increased custom.

For those who have no doubt about the importance of good website content the proof of the pudding is very much in the rewards that they are already reaping as their well thought out and attractive sites filled with up-to-date, well-written copy continue to attract customers and increase their bottom lines. Ironically those for whom good web content is a pointless exercise or worse still an after thought are probably themselves eschewing the sites with the dull copy and buying off of the sites that keep them engaged. So do you business a favour and make your content count.

The Importance of Updating Your Small Business Website

Small business is all about change. If you refuse to change and move with the times and the current business practices of those times, then you are almost destined to fail. In order to succeed in business you need to be constantly updating your products, services, logos, advertising, and website. If you look at any successful business which has passed the test of time you will see that they are constantly evolving to meet the new challenges that they are faced with. With the world now being in the digital age, one of the most important things to keep updated is your website.

The importance of updating your small business website can be measured by the amount of online traffic that you are getting. If you do not have any way to monitor this traffic then you are definitely behind the times and you need to update your site, and any associated analytical tools, as soon as possible. Keeping your website updated will ensure that you can get paid traffic as well as organic traffic coming to your site. When it comes to keeping your site fresh there are few different things that you can look into.

The first thing you will want to update is the overall look of your site. If you have an older site that looks like a plain blog, then it is time to revamp it. This does not mean that you have to pay thousands of dollars for a professional web designer to fix your site. It could be as simple as just changing the template which you are using for your site. If you want to keep costs down, and believe that you are web savvy enough to update your own site, then try using a WordPress setup and templates. WordPress is great because it is free most of the time and it is extremely user friendly. Find a template that looks good and fits the organisation of your site.

Next, you will want to update the content on your site to match your products and services and also to make sure that you are keeping it SEO friendly. If you have an old site that has not had anything added to it in years then you are losing a lot of potential traffic. Search engines like to see sites that are continually growing and changing. They also love fresh content. With this in mind, you should try adding blog posts to your site on a regular basis, or adding and changing keywords so that your site is more relevant.

Lastly, make sure that your website is updated in terms of being easy to use. Make sure the site map is up to date. If you do not have one, get one put on your site. This will help your visitors to navigate their way around your website. Also, consider adding or updating the “frequently asked questions” on your site, to help visitors answer any queries they may have as regards your products or services. Finally, you may consider adding some audio or video to your website. Not only will this help site visitors to relate to you and your, but this is popular with the search engines as well.

Getting Free Traffic to Your Website

So, you’ve finished setting up your website; you have introduced your online business and presented the products and services that you offer. Your website includes promotions to catch your visitor’s attention. So far you have followed the standard blueprint for creating a website servicing an online business. So why you are not seeing the commercial results you were hoping for? The chances are that you have not planned and implemented an effective website promotion campaign. There are a few things you should be aware of when promoting your site.

Any promotional effort should be maintained at a constant rate. It is obviously no use spending a few days promoting your site then taking your foot off the gas as it were. Constant and persistent promotion will be rewarded with gradually improved SERP results and you will also begin to gain attention within your target audience. Patience is a virtue, so they say. You will need to experiment with each promotional technique until you are satisfied that you are using the most effective free methods available. Testing each method is, of course, of paramount importance.

Having said the above, here are four zero cost promotional techniques that you can experiment with until you find what works for you:

Search Engines and Directories

You can place a description and free link to your website in many search engines and online directories. There is usually a paid upgrade option, but most basic listings are free of charge. You will need to search out these online directories and place your link in the sections most applicable to your business.

Link Exchange

Search for other websites similar to your own and contact the webmaster about a mutual exchange of links. This is usually beneficial to both parties so most webmasters will be agreeable to such an exchange. Make sure your link anchor text contains your keyword.

Classified Ads

Search online for sites offering free classified ad placements. One benefit of these ads is that they may be viewed by persons outside of your target audience but who may also be interested in the products and services that you offer.

Free Internet Banners

Place a free (or, in the worst case, low-cost) banner on sites which provide this service. Banners are extremely effective at catching the reader’s attention, however it is important not to ‘overdo’ your banner with multi-colors and flashing text.

When you have implemented the above it is important that you track how your visitors arrive at your site in order to identify the most effective and, by elimination, the least effective promotional techniques. Continual monitoring of your website traffic together with refinement of the effective promotional techniques should result in you seeing an increase in visitors to your site.

Secrets to Domain Names When Starting an Online Business

When starting an online business choosing the best possible domain name is extremely important. The reason it’s so important is name recognition associated with keywords is how you generate traffic to your website. Therefore why not start at the beginning with your domain name. Before anyone buys a domain name and launches an internet business they need to take the time to learn keyword research. If you have no idea where to start here is a great place (free) to begin, type Google keyword tool in your search engine. Near the top of your search you will see Google keyword tools. When you open the site, before you do anything else, click on learn more and take the time to learn keyword research step by step until you completely understand it.

It would be ideal if you could afford to outsource this work to a competent SEO (search engine optimization) company. However for the majority of us starting a business this is very unlikely and we simply have to learn SEO marketing to complete online with traffic generation. Keywords are how people find what they are looking for on the net. We simply type in a keyword phrase and start surfing. The trick to keywords is to find relevant words relating to content that have a good amount of traffic with the least amount of competition. Typically a short tail keyword will have way too much competition, therefore you are never likely to rank even close to page one. However, long tail keywords with the proper research can easily get you on page one of an internet search.

That said, when it comes to domain names long tail or long names are not practical or desired. Therefore a relevant short keyword (providing it is available) is more effective even though you are not likely to rank very high in a search result. The idea here is to have a good name associated or relevant to the business you are providing that people like or can remember. If the keyword or words are relevant than in time along with on page and off page SEO your site will rank very well. With a good reasonably short and relevant keyword domain name you have an excellent start to launching an internet business. With your ability now to do good keyword research you can start creating relevant keyword content, heading tags, internal linking and anchor text links to your website. With this on page SEO you are likely to start ranking very high in the search results and generate traffic to your online business. After all without traffic to your website you have little chance making money online.

I highly recommend taking the time to learn good keyword research and implement SEO marketing if you want a successful online business. We have more, a lot more free information about SEO marketing and how to market online on our website for anyone that is interested. Keep in mind in order to be successful online you must learn marketing skills and implement what you learn.

Making Your Business Website Easy to Navigate

The business world has gone digital. More and more businesses are relying on the global market, which the internet provides, in order to secure business. Obviously, this still depends on the type of business you are running. If you are a local plumber you are probably more worried about getting local business than you are about capturing a market halfway across the world. But for a lot of businesses, getting a larger audience is never a bad thing. Making your business website easy to navigate is crucial for you to be able to get more people to buy products or services from you.

The first step in making your business website easy to navigate is to make sure that it is simple. Some companies get too excited about all of the products and services that they offer and just throw everything down on the landing page. This is the best way to scare away customers and lose business. Your landing page should be simple and have clear instructions and directions on how and where to buy your products or services. Break your site up into a few different categories including the ‘Home’ page, specific product or service category pages, an order page, and also an ‘About Us’ page with your various contact details. If you have too many categories and only have a few products or services then it might be confusing to any visitor. Make sure that each page is clear about what is included in that section.

Next, you want to make sure that you have a clear navigation bar or ’site map’ on your front page. Typically this works best when it is either on the side of the page or at the top. That way people can easily go between pages. You may also want to use a web template that offers a search feature, so potential customers can type in their queries to find out where something is on your site.

Last of all, you want to make sure that you have a call to action on each of your pages. If you are selling something, then you want to make it is easy as possible for your customers to get to the order page. The more steps that a visitor has to go through to make a purchase, the less likely they are to do it. Therefore, you should have an ‘Order Now’ button on every relevant page on your website site.
