Blogging Archives

There is no doubt that the internet has become the best friend of the small business, with its wealth of easily accessible information and the availability of otherwise difficult to source individuals and products. There are very many ways for the modern business to utilize the web to good effect, a perfect example being the business blog.

Many businesses are now learning just what an amazing marketing opportunity having a business blog is as it generates not only sales but will contribute to increasing the profile of your business in a labour saving and cost effective way. It is important to be aware however that venturing into the world of the business blog and getting it wrong can be as damaging to your business as getting it right can be an aid to its success.

Probably the worst thing a business can do with their blog is to start with gusto posting like mad, only to flag a few weeks in and stop up-dating altogether. A business blog needs to be a regular thing, if your intention is to use it to drive business your way, there is absolutely no point posting a few times and then getting bored, like all other forms of marketing it needs a sustained approach. If for some reason you cannot dedicate regular amounts of time to its up-date then delegate the responsibility, pass the job to a colleague or outsource to a blogging firm and if your regular blogger is going to be absent for any length of time, always ensure a replacement, treat your business blog as an important tool and you’ll reap the rewards.

It is also important to remember that your business blog is a marketing tool for your business and not a place for you to vent your spleen or converse with friends; a business blog should at all times be used with the utmost professionalism if you plan on being taken seriously in your chosen market. Of course blogging is a new and exciting and much less formal way of communicating with your potential customer base, but it is important not to get too carried away, respect your audience and never lose sight of who they are, they are potential customers and other business owners and you will be judged on your postings, so get everything vetted by someone else before it is published, nothing should go on to your blog before it has first been seen through the eyes of a colleague, this will not only prove a form of gentle censorship, but will act as a proof-reading hopefully picking-up missed grammatical and/or spelling mistakes. Blog Ethics

Creating a blog is a great way for anyone to share their life experiences and even advertise their business. To date there are no actual code of ethics developed for bloggers to follow but there are three common sense ethic codes that anyone should follow while they are running their blog posts. These are the code of ethics that will prove you as a trustworthy blog owner.

1. Fair and Honest:

You need to be fair and honest to your followers. You need to make sure all the information you provide is honest without adding any false information. When you are providing facts you need to make them distinct, true, and easy to follow. Do not attempt to distort your facts, visitors can read this right away and as a result, you will lose visitors. If you happen to provide any information, in your site that may appear to be false; you need to provide your reader with factual information to back up your statement. If you are adding pictures to your blog add captions underneath to explain to the reader about the picture. Fair and Honest are two of the most important components of the bloggers code of ethics.

2. Harm of others:

When you are creating a blog topic on a very controversial issue avoid using any ones names or places. This will protect you from any lawsuits and also from hurting visitors’ feelings. A good motto for this code of ethic would be, say to others what you would want them to say about you. You also need to be sure that you protect a person’s privacy. Invading a person’s privacy is rude as well as intrusive. If you do not want someone doing it to you then do not do it to others. A great way to avoid violating this blog code of ethic is to avoid using names or places if it all possible. If it is unavoidable try to use as much damage control as possible. Tips For Starting a Blog For Your Business

We all know that the internet will be the way of the future as more and more people go online to research for information, goods and services but a successful blog for your business needs a plan. Blogging is quick and easy to set up but you first must consider the reason for your blogging and what you hope to achieve by blogging. Things like the theme for your blog, what information are you going to blog about and what sort of blog are you going to use.

Who are you going to blog to?

Before you start blogging you need to consider who your target audience is and what they want to read about or more importantly what they like to read about. What is your target market? Who are they? What are their demographics? What are their needs and desires? Is your product an evergreen one? Is it a one off purchase or a product that people purchase regularly?

What are you going to say?

Now you have worked out your target audience you can now write your blog aimed at these people. If you do not know what they want simply ask them. Create a simple survey. Ask people what they need to know about your product. For example it might sound great to give someone a 30 year guarantee on an air conditioner, but not if they are over 80. They are more concerned about keeping warm in the next winter or cool in the next summer. Just do not write content for contents sake as your readers will quickly find another blog to read instead. If you live in a close knit community it may be OK to write about local issues but if your target audience is worldwide or spread over a big area then you need to keep local issues to a minimum unless they are relevant to your product or service. Bear in mind you want your blog to work for your business not be meanly the local gossip stop off point.

What sort of blog are you going to create?

Now you know who is going to read your blog and what you are going to say you need to work out what sort of blog its going to be, Are you going to get a domain name that brands your business and have it hosted on a hosting service where you have full control its content and design? This is not cheap to set up and maintain but if done properly it can pay dividends for some businesses. If you already have an existing domain name can you add your blog to it? Depending on your business a free blog may be all you need. Some of these free blogs, for example blogger.com, weebly.com, wordpress.com to name a few, can for the right businesses be more than adequate.

How often are you going to post to your blog?

A blog is not a static site so therefore requires you to regularly add good content, not just any old content, for it to be successful. Your readers can subscribe to your blog through RSS feeds and the will be notified when you post to you blog. It is best to keep the content friendly and not too sales orientated and to leave the reader wanting to know more about your product or service. They will then click through to your main website or contact your physical business for more information about your product.

So before you start blogging find out who is going to read your blog so that you know what to blog about, the theme of your blog and what sort of blog you need to reach this target market.
